Learning Maya (Introduction)
SGI (IRIX)or NT Platform, Length: 4 Days

This course offers students who are new to 3D the chance to go through the first half of the Learning Maya Tutorial book with the help of a certified instructor. The goal is to accelerate learning using in-depth lectures that put the Maya tools in context. Learn the basic concepts of 3D modeling and animation while learning to navigate Maya’s interface. Become familiar with basic polygonal and NURBS modeling techniques and modeling with primitive objects. Learn keyframe animation and deformations, and how to edit the animations using the Graph Editor and the Dope Sheet. Introduction to shaders, shading networks and rendering using the Hypershade window.
Prerequisite: No prerequisites are required for this class. Students should have some 2D and/or 3D computer art experience and have solid basic computer skills.

Learning Maya (Transition)
SGI (IRIX)or NT Platform, Length: 4 Days

This course is similar to the Learning Maya Introduction but is at a more advanced level and uses lessons from the second half of the Learning Maya Tutorial book. These lessons are complimented by a certified instructor with detailed studies of the methods used. The focus of this course is to establish a strong working knowledge of the Maya interface, workflow and techniques, concentrating on optimizing the modeling, animation and rendering functionality. The pace of this course is much faster than the Introduction course and a more in-depth view of the fundamentals will be covered.
Prerequisite: This course is designed for students who have practical experience in another production-level 3D animation application. Students should have a working familiarity with the Maya interface and also should have completed the basic lessons of the Learning Maya tutorials.

Character Animation in Maya
SGI (IRIX)or NT Platform, Length: 4 Days

This intensive course covers the advanced character animation functionality in Maya. A pre-built character is provided, and students will learn to use this character to create and animate a “digital puppet.” Concepts covered are Forward and Inverse Kinematics, muscular deformations, expressions and other automatic character controls. Students will also use several geometry morphing techniques to synch mouth and facial expressions to one of several sound files provided.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed the Learning Maya tutorials. It is strongly recommended that students have some practical experience using Maya and an understanding of the fundamentals of character animation.

Maya MEL Fundamentals
SGI (IRIX)or NT Platform, Length: 4 Days

Students will learn how to use MEL,the underlying language upon which Maya is built, to customize Maya environments and components to enhance productivity. Learn how to create custom windows, buttons, sliders and other “widgets” within Maya to control specific aspects of a scene. Instructors will also review custom script creations for automating modeling and animation tasks, creating custom particle effects and other dynamic simulations as well as creating the tools that invoke these scripts.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed the Learning Maya tutorials including reviewing the MEL Documentation. It is strongly recommended that students have some practical experience using Maya.

Maya Rendering
SGI (IRIX)or NT Platform, Length: 4 Days

Students will be immersed in the tools used for rendering in Maya. This class is fast paced and will develop a strong understanding of lights, shadows, textures and camera settings and how they interact with a scene. Students will learn how to create complex shaders and shading networks, how to use the Maya interactive renderer, how to render for compositing and how to optimize a scene for more efficient use of your hardware.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed the Learning Maya tutorials including reviewing the Rendering Documentation. It is strongly recommended that students some practical experience using Maya.

Maya Special Topics
SGI (IRIX)or NT Platform,
Length: 2, 3 or 4 Days

This class is designed for the intermediate to advanced student who wants to explore Maya functionality in more depth than is offered in Maya Transition, but more broadly than in any of the specialized classes. Students will spend one day exploring each major aspect of Maya. Lessons cover various approaches to advanced Designs and Modeling, Shading Networks and Rendering, advanced Dynamics principles, (including particle animation and expressions), and writing MEL scripts to build custom interface windows and automate tasks.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed the Learning Maya tutorials. It is strongly recommended that students have some practical experience using Maya.
