BOSTON’S MAYOR MENINO BREAKS GROUND ON GLOBIX
SUPERPOP INTERNET DATA CENTER
The new Globix SuperPOP in Boston will be the largest Internet Data Center in New
England, supporting regional businesses exploding demand for Internet services in the
21st century.
BOSTON — July 19, 2000 —
Globix Corporation (NASDAQ: GBIX), a leader in advanced Internet Data
Center services, high-speed access, and streaming media solutions for businesses, today joined
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and leading high-tech real estate development company, Cabot,
Cabot & Forbes (CC&F;), to break ground on the newest Globix SuperPOP Internet Data Center.
“The Globix SuperPOP will bring numerous benefits to the local community,” said Mayor Menino.
“This facility will transform a former steel warehouse into a beautifully designed center for high
technology. It will build the Internet infrastructure necessary for business in the area, and it will
bring jobs to local residents.”
Initially conceived as a multi-tenant telecom and Internet facility named Boston Internet City, the
site was renamed the Globix SuperPOP Internet Data Center after Globix acquired the entire facility.
CC&F; is redeveloping the Casey & Hayes building, formerly the Carnegie Steel Boston Warehouse, at
176 Lincoln St. along the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brighton, Mass., into a state-of-the-art Internet
Data Center customized for Globix. At 450,000 square feet, it will be the largest Internet Data Center
in New England. The grand opening is scheduled to take place before the second quarter of 2001.
Globix currently has three SuperPOP facilities operating in New York, London and Santa Clara, with
eight more in the development and planning stages worldwide. Each Globix SuperPOP (Point of
Presence) provides dual connections to the areas power grid, redundant Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS) systems and back-up generators, 24 x 7 x 365 on-site monitoring and technical
staffing, advanced biometric security systems and redundant temperature-control and fire-suppression
systems.
“Boston has a rich legacy in technology and we’re pleased to be a part of the region’s technology
community,” said Marc H. Bell, chairman and CEO of Globix. “With the opening of the Globix
SuperPOP, we look forward to being a catalyst for Internet growth by serving the region’s growing
demand for advanced Internet infrastructure, high-speed network access, and application
solutions.”
“Globix is leading the way, as the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure is rebuilt to meet the
needs of the new economy,” said Jay Doherty, president of Cabot, Cabot & Forbes. “We’re pleased
to provide Globix with a specialized facility that will bring their state-of-the-art services to the area.
We plan to make the Globix SuperPOP an example of the nation’s next generation of Internet Data
Center development.”
CC&F; will undertake a complete reconstruction of the existing facility, add a third level and
dramatically upgrade the property’s appearance with an exterior of masonry and glass, and heavy
landscaping. The Globix SuperPOP will be a highly secure, climate-controlled environment with
specialized raised floors and drop ceilings for power and network cable. Web servers will be housed
in steel cages and cabinets and will use the Globix Network to transmit data, video and audio
streams over the Internet and around the world.
CC&F; has assembled a development team, based on its telecommunications industry expertise,
from Boston and from around the nation, including the internationally acclaimed architectural firm
Elkus/Manfredi.
