This role is responsible for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the Globix network infrastructure. This role is the escalation point for all operational issues some of which include backbone failures, traffic distribution, routing anomalies, DDOS mitigation, packet filtering, and network congestion/latency. It includes the evaluation and identification of deficiencies related to reliability, interoperability, and maintainability of network hardware and software in order to enhance customer service.
Major Areas of Accountability
Assist Network Operations in the diagnosis of difficult or complex layer 2 and 3 problems. Escalate to Network Architecture as a last resort for more complex issues.
Responsible for implementing routing policies through the network. Test, evaluate, and identify deficiencies on new network hardware and software prior to deployment.
Work with multiple vendors and common carriers during problem analysis/resolution as required.
Develop and document configuration guidelines for use by Network Operations. Develop testing requirements for new hardware and software versions.
Work with vendor to resolve equipment design problems and specify desired enhancements. Help with the development of hardware and software upgrade strategies to support the evolution of the backbone.
Provide Sales Engineering support as/when required.
Participate in engineering conferences where the evolution, direction, and future topology/configuration of the network are discussed and designed based on network growth and the availability of emerging technology.
Position Qualifications Required
Strong hands on experience in deployment and maintenance of Cisco and Juniper equipment. In-depth knowledge of Cisco IOS and Juniper OS, ISP/LAN/WAN internetworking environment.
Superior understanding of network routing and switching protocols such as: BGP, OSPF, RIP, EIGRP, MPLS, AToM, LDP, HSRP, NAT, and Spanning-Tree.
Hands on experience with the provisioning, troubleshooting, and understanding of SONET and POS, Frame Relay, T1, DS-3, and OC-x circuits.
Hardware knowledge of the following: Cisco 25/26/3600, 4000, 7200, 7500, 10000ESR, 12000GSR Series Routers; Cisco 1900, 2900, 3900, 5500, 6500 Series Catalyst Switches; Juniper M-Series Internet Backbone Routers; Server Technology Remote Power Manager (Sentry); Rack Modems.
Solid project management skills; Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures and able to work within standard network maintenance windows; Ability to travel; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Flexible and able to work independently and as a part of a team; This position requires to be on a 24×7 rotating escalation list.
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related field is desired. 1-2 years of ISP and network engineering/operations experience.
CCNA certification or demonstrably equivalent knowledge required.
