Globix Unveils New State-of-the-Art Encoding StudioNEW YORK – December 13, 2000NEW YORK – Dec. 13, 2000 – Globix Corporation (NASDAQ: GBIX) plans to inaugurate its new, state-of-the-art Streaming Media Encoding Studio at the end of December. The new studio will significantly increase the volume of content that Globix can process each month.
The new studio houses multiple encoding stations and two video fiber feeds. Each encoding station includes both capture and encoding machines, which can capture content from a wide variety of audio, video and digitized tape formats – including SVHS, three-quarter inch, DV CAM, BetaCam, Digital BetaCam, DVD, CD, DAT and more – and encode the content for broadcasting over the Internet in RealNetworks, Windows Media or QuickTime streaming media formats.
Globix operators at each encoding station will monitor incoming signals from the tape source and be able to correct quality issues with the audio or video. They also will monitor the quality of the encoded signal to ensure the optimal quality of the output.
For live events, Globix will receive clients’ content via its video fiber feeds, which are connected to The Switch, a customer-controlled video-switching service. The Switch’s customers include all major networks, most common carries, international news services, local broadcast stations, cable television networks, local sports and entertainment news organizations and financial-trading venues. Globix will encode that content into the client’s format of choice – RealNetworks, Windows Media or QuickTime – and will monitor the quality of the output before placing it in the streaming media content delivery network.
Thus while the new encoding studio is located in the Globix New York headquarters, it will serve clients around the globe from an Internet broadcasting platform that rides the Globix worldwide network.
‘By enhancing our encoding operations, we are strengthening our commitment to provide clients with a full array of broadcasting services – including superior-quality encoding capability – for which Globix is renowned,’ said Dan Rayburn, Product Manager of Streaming Media.
The studio has been built to process a large volume of analog signals, comprising the most popular tape formats today, while enabling Globix to grow its digital and HDTV signal processing capabilities in the future without major rebuilding or reconfiguration.
